Alfa Tiles uses the same rules and creative possibilities as Alfa Cards. The difference is the physical format: this version uses tactile letter tiles for a fuller tabletop experience.

Core game system

The Alfa rules in a tactile tile format

Alfa Tiles follows the same central word-building idea as Alfa Cards. Players create, extend, and transform words; the main difference is that the letters are physical tiles rather than portable cards.

How to play

  • Build valid words containing at least three letters.
  • Add tiles to extend an existing word.
  • Replace letters by superimposing tiles to create new words.
  • Connect words so all resulting combinations remain valid.
  • Use an agreed dictionary when a word is challenged.

Learning value

  • Develop vocabulary through related-word exploration.
  • Practise spelling, flexible thinking, and pattern recognition.
  • Make word construction visible and easy for a group to discuss.
  • Combine gameplay with reflection and facilitated conversation.
  • Use blank tiles when a required letter is unavailable.
Learning activity

Two reflection activities with Alfa Tiles

Use the tiles to make individual learning visible and to build a shared crossword of group reflections.

Alfa Tiles activityReflective practice

Build a keyword that represents your learning

Use the physical tiles to create visible keywords that represent the learning and experience of each person in the group.

  1. Organise learners into small groups of four to six people.
  2. Invite one learner at a time to identify a keyword that resonates with their learning from that day.
  3. Ask the learner to build the keyword using Alfa Tiles and place it in front of them.
  4. The learner shares what the keyword means to them, while other learners may add their own perspectives.
  5. Repeat the process with the remaining learners and continue for several rounds if appropriate.
  6. Conclude by reviewing the collection of keywords visible on the table and discussing the shared themes.
Alfa Tiles activityCrossword reflection

Build a Shared Reflection Crossword

Each participant builds a keyword and connects it with the words already placed, creating a visible map of the group’s learning.

  1. Spread the Alfa Tiles with the letters facing upward. Four blank tiles may substitute for missing letters.
  2. The first participant thinks of a keyword they would like to reflect on.
  3. Use the tiles to build that keyword.
  4. Share what the keyword means and reflect on its significance.
  5. Other participants may contribute their own reflections on the keyword.
  6. The next participant repeats the process and connects a new keyword where possible.
  7. Continue until time is up or the available tiles have been used.
